Crypto Heist: Binance Loses $6.36 Billion in 20 Minutes
Researchers attribute the record-breaking theft to North Korea, while the exchange freezes $3 billion in assets to protect customers.

Theft of $6.36 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance represents the largest cyber heist in history. The breach occurred in the late afternoon and lasted only 20 minutes. During that window, hackers moved the bulk of the stolen funds out of the exchange.
Binance is the largest crypto exchange in the world. It holds trading accounts for investment funds and individual investors. Researchers are still determining the exact method of entry. They believe the attackers bypassed multiple security layers to access user accounts directly.
Ari Redbord, global head of policy at TRM Labs, described the event as the largest bank robbery in human history. He noted that the speed of the transfer allowed the funds to move at the speed of the internet. Redbord stated that the operation was too well planned and executed to be the work of commercial hackers looking for profit.
TRM Labs and other research firms point to North Korea as the likely perpetrator. Redbord cited the country’s history of cyberattacks and its military hacker teams. He said these teams are professional and sophisticated. Their goals often include weapons proliferation and destabilizing activity, not just financial gain.
Binance has promised to fully reimburse customers who lost money. The exchange is working with other platforms to track the stolen assets. It has already frozen approximately $3 billion in cryptocurrency that may have belonged to Binance users. The company says it is racing against the hackers to prevent them from consolidating the funds.
Cryptocurrencies are traceable, similar to how currency serial numbers track physical cash. This traceability allows researchers to follow the money. However, the recovery process is described as a cat-and-mouse game. Hackers are attempting to move the assets into accounts they control to gain full possession.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about regulation in the crypto sector. Binance pleaded guilty to violating anti-money laundering laws in 2023. It paid over $4 billion in penalties at that time. Unlike the New York Stock Exchange, crypto exchanges operate in a less regulated environment. This lack of oversight means it is currently unclear exactly which accounts were affected by the breach.
Binance says it is making affected users whole. The exchange continues to recover funds. The specific identity of the hackers remains unconfirmed, though the evidence strongly supports the North Korea hypothesis.
