The U.S. Department of Justice awarded Jackson $100 million to fund public safety improvements. The city will use the money to strengthen mental health services, improve crisis response, and support law enforcement operations. This grant is part of the Model Cities Initiative, a program created in the summer 2025 reconciliation law to direct federal resources to cities enhancing public safety measures.

The initiative was first announced in June. At that time, Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the administration was using available authorities to ensure American safety. He described the program as a way to supercharge law enforcement partners and restore the rule of law in neighborhoods, towns, and cities. Blanche noted the administration’s message is to help those who help them make America safe again.

Mississippi’s full congressional delegation supported Jackson’s application. The group includes Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith, as well as Representatives Trent Kelly, Bennie Thompson, Michael Guest, and Mike Ezell. They sent a letter to Attorney General Blanche advocating for the funding. The delegation said the capital city has made strides in public safety and that the new funds will help community leaders reduce crime and support victims.

In a joint statement, the delegation praised Mayor John Horhn for successfully pursuing the award. They stated that safer neighborhoods help families thrive, attract new residents, and fuel economic growth in Jackson and beyond. The delegation described the city’s approach as a coordinated effort to combine public health and public safety initiatives.

Mayor Horhn said reducing violent crime requires a unified effort across every sector of the city. He noted the Model Cities Initiative provides an opportunity to bring departments, public safety partners, and community organizations together around a common goal. The mayor stated the city is committed to ensuring these efforts are coordinated, focused, and responsive to community needs.

The Justice Department also announced grants for three other cities on Friday. Baton Rouge, Jacksonville, and St. Louis will also receive funding through the Model Cities Initiative. These awards mark the first major disbursements under the new federal program established last summer.

The funding for Jackson is the largest single award reported for a Mississippi city under this specific initiative. The city will now begin planning how to allocate the $100 million across its various public safety and health departments.
