Macomb Community College has set a November 20 deadline for winter 2027 applications to its Michigan Apprenticeship Program Plus, a tuition-free initiative aimed at preparing students for entry-level roles in construction and advanced manufacturing.
The program launched with a focus on bridging the gap between academic coursework and immediate workforce needs. Participants complete one semester of technical training alongside career readiness seminars. These seminars cover time management, critical thinking, resume development, and interview skills. The curriculum is designed to give students the foundational skills required to enter the skilled trades quickly.
Mark Jewett, associate dean of Engineering and Advanced Technology, described the program as a no-cost on-ramp to careers. He noted that students earn college credit and receive hands-on training in skills that employers currently demand. Jewett emphasized that the program includes a final employer networking event where local businesses interview students for open positions.
The college will hold an informational session on November 11 at 5 p.m. in Room 191 of the T Building on its South Campus in Warren. The event will provide details on course structures and the application process. Individuals who cannot attend may contact the program directly via email at map_plus@macomb.edu to receive materials.
Applicants must submit a completed MAP+ application, a high school or college transcript, and standardized test scores. Acceptable scores include the SAT or ACT WorkKeys. If an applicant lacks a previously completed assessment, the college will arrange a no-cost WorkKeys test after receiving the application. There are 22 spots available in each cohort.
Successful participants will earn 13 college credits and an Industrial Readiness Certificate upon completion of the semester. The program targets high school seniors planning their next step and adults seeking a career change. The college serves as the largest community college in Michigan, granting the most associate degrees in the state.
Submissions for the winter 2027 semester are due by November 20. The program concludes with a hiring event where local employers meet with students for interviews. This structure allows for direct placement into entry-level skilled trade jobs immediately following the semester.
