Kylian Mbappe scored both goals for Real Madrid in a 2-1 victory over Barcelona on Sunday night at Camp Nou. The French forward's brace was enough to silence the home crowd and secure three points for a team that started the match as the underdog. With the final whistle, Real Madrid claimed bragging rights in the rivalry for the first time this season.
The result ended Barcelona's nine-game winning streak in La Liga. Had the Catalan side won, they would have broken Real Madrid's 1968-69 record for the best start in the Spanish top flight. This marked the second consecutive defeat for Hansi Flick's side, following their loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League just days earlier. For Real Madrid, the win snapped a difficult period that included losses to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid last month.
Mbappe's two goals brought his career total for Real Madrid to 100 across all competitions. He has been with the club since joining from PSG in 2024. The 27-year-old now has 14 goals this season, making him the second-best scorer in La Liga. His performance came on the eve of the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, where he is considered a frontrunner for the award after finishing as the top scorer in La Liga, the Champions League, and the World Cup last year.
The victory also shifted the all-time head-to-head record. Real Madrid now holds the lead with 107 wins to Barcelona's 106 in their historical encounters. Manager Jose Mourinho, in his first season back in Spain, has guided his team to five consecutive wins across all competitions. This streak includes three league victories and two Champions League results.
Real Madrid currently sits third in the league table with 24 points after ten matches. Barcelona leads the standings with 27 points, while Atletico Madrid sits in second place with 25 points. The gap between the top teams has narrowed as the season progresses. Mourinho, who has not won a league title since leading Chelsea to the Premier League crown in 2014-15, celebrated the win with a knee slide on the pitch.
The manager emphasized the team's long-term goals during the post-match interview. He stated, “If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou. They're playing to win the championship.” The 63-year-old coach has previously led Real Madrid to three trophies during his first spell, including a record-breaking La Liga title. His current squad appears to be finding stability after a shaky start to the campaign.
The match provided immediate momentum for Real Madrid's title hopes. With just over a quarter of the league season completed, the team has closed the distance to the leaders. The win at Camp Nou serves as a tangible result of Mourinho's tactical adjustments. It also boosts the morale of a squad that has been searching for consistency since the summer transfer window closed.
