Connor Davis has recorded four points in his first five games for the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. The freshman forward is adjusting to college life in Grand Forks while balancing his hockey schedule.
Davis grew up in Montreal but represents Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, in his hockey career. He spoke to the Grand Forks Herald about his transition to the university and his interests off the ice.
Although he grew up in Montreal, Davis is fluent in both English and French. He attended a private school in Montreal where he learned French to survive in the Quebec hockey system. He said his parents emphasized the importance of education, which led him to prep school and eventually to the college ranks.
Davis said North Dakota was always at the top of his list of potential colleges. He noted that few players from Quebec choose college hockey over the QMJHL. When North Dakota recruiters reached out to him last year, he described the opportunity as a dream come true.
His interest in hockey began when his older brother took up the sport. Davis said he wanted to follow in his brother's footsteps. Both his father and grandfather were fans of the Boston Bruins. Davis said he started playing just to learn how to skate before becoming more serious as he got older.
Davis cites Clayton Keller as a major influence on his game. He watched Keller play at the NTDP and Boston University. Davis has tried to build his own style around Keller's play. He also mentioned a favorite meme, the image of Homer Simpson fading into the bushes.
Away from the ice, Davis is competitive in the kitchen. He cooks dinner for his family occasionally and tries to create dishes better than his parents. He noted that his family enjoys Sunday dinners and that his grandparents cook frequently. His favorite meal his parents make is ackee and saltfish or jerk chicken.
Davis said his pregame routine is simple. He takes a nap of 15 to 30 minutes before games. He does not nap for less or longer than that window. He said he is a basic guy in his rituals.
He named his most memorable goal as one he scored for North Dakota. He said he watched that game growing up and wished he could play there. He said he would not want to score that goal anywhere else. He also said his favorite childhood memory was playing outdoor hockey in his backyard with his siblings on a rink his parents built.
Davis has some friends with family in Greece, and he said he would love to visit someday. He has seen videos of the area from them. He also said his favorite food spot in Grand Forks is Harry's. He went there last weekend with his billet family and described the experience as amazing.
