The Vatican confirmed on Monday that Pope Leo will depart for South America as planned, clearing the 71-year-old leader to undertake a major international trip following recent cancer surgery.

The Holy See stated that Leo’s recovery is on track and that his physical condition allows him to fulfill his upcoming duties. A Vatican statement cited the Pope’s personal physician, Luigi Carbone, who reported that the latest medical examinations show the pontiff in good health with a favorable clinical condition.

Leo underwent surgery on October 13, during which doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung. The procedure led to a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer. Despite this, the Vatican said there are no contraindications preventing him from traveling.

The trip is scheduled to run from November 6 to November 17. It will take the Pope to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. The itinerary includes visits to 10 cities and 36 scheduled speeches. The Vatican noted that the previously published agenda will remain unchanged.

This tour represents a significant return for Leo, who spent decades as a missionary in Peru. He was called back to Rome in 2023 by his predecessor, Francis, and promoted to Vatican positions. The journey marks a homecoming for the first pope from the United States.

In a message accompanying the announcement, Leo expressed his eagerness to return to the continent where he experienced many formative moments. He hoped the journey would help believers open their hearts to one another and strengthen their communion.

The Pope has been adjusting his daily schedule in consultation with doctors to prioritize recovery while continuing his ministry. On Sunday, he addressed the faithful in St. Peter’s Square. However, on medical advice, he canceled a planned day visit to the central Italian town of Assisi, which had been set for Tuesday.
