The Vicksburg National Military Park is moving forward with a major expansion project that includes a new 60,000-square-foot visitor center. Officials expect the facility to open in 2030. The structure will house classrooms, an event space, and a museum focused on local history.

The total project cost is estimated at $89.5 million. Local city and county governments have committed up to $15.5 million to the effort. The state of Mississippi has pledged $56 million. The federal government has agreed to contribute $3 million. Private donors have provided an additional $15 million.

Senator Roger Wicker, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Congressman Glen Thompson introduced legislation to transfer federal land to the State of Mississippi. The bill passed successfully. This transfer allows construction to proceed without delay.

The park preserves 1,800 acres of battlefield land. It contains more than 1,300 historic monuments. These monuments represent 22 states and hundreds of regiments. The new center aims to help visitors understand the scale of the conflict. The Confederate surrender at Vicksburg occurred on July 4, 1863. The Union victory at Gettysburg happened one day earlier. Both events shifted the momentum of the Civil War.

Congress established the Vicksburg National Military Park in 1899. In October, Mississippi officials, private donors, and volunteers gathered to mark progress on the project. The group represented various levels of government. The collaboration ensures that public and private interests support the buildout.

A study projects that the center will attract 200,000 visitors in its first seven years of operation. The facility is expected to facilitate 1,600 jobs. The neighboring economy should receive $230 million in revenue. Local hotels, stores, and restaurants will likely see increased traffic. Tourists are expected to stay longer and spend more in Vicksburg.

Senator Wicker also introduced bipartisan legislation this summer. The bill would designate a month as National American History and Founders Month. The designation would be permanent. It serves as an annual reminder for schools and communities to study the nation's founding principles.
