Max Korman’s feature debut, Joy Will Prevail, receives its international premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on Saturday, Nov. 7. The film marks the director’s entry into the medium and focuses on the final three years of Louis I. Kahn’s life and career. It is the first time the story of the architect’s last residential commission has been adapted for the big screen.
The narrative centers on the construction of the Korman House, a residence Kahn designed outside Philadelphia. Steve Korman, the film’s subject and Korman’s grandfather, commissioned the building, which was completed shortly before Kahn’s death in 1974. The structure serves as the director’s childhood home. The plot explores the unlikely friendship between the architect and the client while depicting Kahn’s legacy.
Griffin Dunne portrays Louis I. Kahn in the lead role. The cast includes Jennifer Beals, Alexis Bledel, and Ben Rosenfield, who plays Steve Korman. Molly Ephraim joins the ensemble. Joshua Echevarria served as cinematographer, and Sarah Flack handled the editing. Producers for the project include J. Andrew Greenblatt, Max Korman, Derek Dienner, and Alex Peace-Power.
The film examines how Kahn managed a complex personal life as a father to children with three different women. It also looks at his professional standing as the founder of a Philadelphia-based atelier established in 1935. The story connects to his other famous works, including the Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban in Bangladesh, the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California.
Kahn was born in Kuressaare on the Estonian island of Saaremaa. The film’s return to his birthplace is organized in cooperation with the Louis Kahn Estonia Foundation. The premiere event will feature Dunne and director Korman. The team will travel to Kuressaare on Sunday for a special screening. This event ties the film’s release to the location where Kahn’s life began.
Joy Will Prevail had its world premiere at the Philadelphia Film Festival. The international screening at PÖFF occurs on the 30th edition of the festival. A trailer for the film is now available, showing scenes with Dunne, Beals, and Bledel. The footage provides an initial look at the biographical drama.
