DeSoto County School District closed all campuses and district offices for November 3 and November 4. The decision followed persistent flooding on major roadways that made travel difficult for students and staff.
The district issued the announcement on Monday. Officials confirmed that all after-school programs, athletic events, and extracurricular activities scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday are canceled. The closure applies to every school within the county boundaries.
DeSoto County Sheriff's Office deputies identified several specific areas as currently flooded. These locations include the intersection of NE Washington and NE Turner, the crossing at Highway 17 and NE Turner, the southbound lane near the Brownsville Dollar General, and Jerry's RV Park.
Sheriff's Office personnel noted that active rainfall had stopped. However, they warned that water levels could continue to rise in certain parts of the county. Deputies advised residents not to drive through flooded roads to prevent vehicle damage or accidents.
The district plans to decide on the status of schools for Thursday, November 5, on Wednesday. In a social media post, district officials said they recognize the challenges flooding creates for families. They encouraged everyone to use caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and prioritize safety.
