The Utah Mammoth defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime on Thursday night in Pittsburgh. Mikhail Sergachev scored the winning goal to end the game.
Logan Cooley, 22, provided the offensive spark for the visiting team. The forward recorded three goals in the contest. His efforts erased an early deficit and kept the Mammoth in the game late.
The decisive sequence occurred in the final minute of regulation. The Penguins had taken a 3-2 lead with roughly 20 seconds remaining. Cooley struck back with a goal that tied the score at 3-all. That goal forced the matchup into an extra period.
Cooley grew up in Pittsburgh and participated in the Sidney Crosby Little Penguins Learn to Play program as a child. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play against his hometown organization. "Those are the guys I looked up to, and I'm super fortunate to be from here," Cooley said. "To get three (goals) was obviously special and to get the win, it means even more."
Utah head coach Andre Tourigny focused on his team's reaction after surrendering the lead. He noted that the players had chances to pull away earlier in the game but did not. "There were frustration, and we're capable of making the big play at the key moment," Tourigny said. He emphasized the team's ability to refocus during the emotional shift.
Sergachev, who secured the victory, praised Cooley's all-around abilities. He described the forward as an "unbelievable skater" who defends hard. Sergachev stated that Cooley is showing everyone what kind of player he is when he puts his skills together.
The Penguins' loss ended their home streak. The result reflects the physical nature of the rivalry between the two franchises. Cooley's performance capped a night where his personal connection to the city played a central role in the final score.
