Nebraska and Washington face off Saturday night at Memorial Stadium, a contest where a loss for either team threatens its remaining college football playoff prospects. Nebraska is currently 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten, while Washington sits at 4-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Huskers are ranked 34th in The Athletic's 138-team ratings, while the Huskies are 56th.

The statistical profile of Nebraska's defense defines the primary path to victory. The Huskers allow opponents an average of 15.4 points per game, ranking 14th in the country. They lead the nation in third-down defense, holding opponents to a 19.3 percent conversion rate, with opponents converting only 17 of 88 attempts. Nebraska also ranks ninth in total defense, yielding 271.3 yards per game. Washington's offense ranks 69th in total output, averaging 386.7 yards per game.

On the offensive side, Nebraska relies on a ground game that ranks 29th in the nation with 194.4 yards per game. Head coach Matt Rhule noted that running backs Mekhi Nelson and Jamal Rule are key to the strategy. Rule is dealing with an ankle injury sustained against Maryland, but Rhule said the bye week provided a necessary break. Nebraska also converts 50.5 percent of its third-down attempts, tying with USC for the best mark in the Big Ten.

Washington's potential for an upset rests on its aerial attack. The Huskies rank 21st in the nation in passing yards, averaging 282.7 per game. They have outgained opponents through the air, 1,979 to 1,435 yards, for the season. Quarterback Demond Williams Jr. is listed as the starter despite missing the previous game at Purdue with a rib injury. Williams has thrown for 1,396 yards and eight touchdowns on 66.7 percent completion this year.

Rhule described Washington as a vertical passing offense under coach Jedd Fisch. He noted that the system is constructed for players with NFL experience and utilizes play-action to push the ball down the field. Washington's defense presents a specific challenge for Nebraska's run game, as the Huskies rank 53rd in rushing defense, allowing 131 yards per game. They held Purdue's Fame Ijejoi to 19 yards in their last outing.

FanDuel lists Nebraska as a 7.5-point favorite in the matchup. According to The Athletic, a win for Nebraska gives the Huskers a 90 percent chance of making the College Football Playoff. Their remaining schedule includes Illinois, Rutgers, Ohio State, and Iowa.
