A Megabucks jackpot of $29.71 million, the largest in the game's history, was claimed on Oct. 28 by the Potato Head Trust of Springfield, the Massachusetts Lottery said. Trustee Hyman Darling took a one-time payment of $19,635,669 before taxes. Darling said the winner chose the trust's name in honor of someone they knew who reminded them of Mr. Potato Head.

The drawing took place Sept. 7. The winning ticket was sold before that drawing at King Mart on Westfield Road in Holyoke, and the store receives a $50,000 bonus for the sale, according to the lottery. Megabucks has been offered in Massachusetts since 1982. Matching all six drawn numbers wins the top prize. Drawings are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9 p.m.

The $29.71 million payout tops the prior record of $21,714,520, hit Oct. 16, 1985. Other large jackpots in the game's history include $21,148,080 on Jan. 8, 1986; $18,218,080 on March 10, 1984; and $16,350,000 on Sept. 10, 2022. The tenth-largest was $13,855,359, drawn Oct. 6, 1990.

The lottery lists Megabucks as a progressive jackpot game available only in Massachusetts.
