Maryland police officers will patrol the homes of registered sex offenders on Halloween, according to a statement released Wednesday. The Maryland Division of Community Correction and Supervision confirms that these individuals have no-contact restrictions. Officers will coordinate with probation and parole agents to verify that the rules are followed. This action is intended to keep the community safe during the holiday.

The department advises residents to check the Maryland Sex Offender Registry or the U.S. Department of Justice website for information on registered offenders in their area. If a resident believes a registered sex offender with a no-contact order is handing out candy, they should call the Sex Offender Registry Team at 410-887-7740.

Maryland authorities also issued safety guidelines for the holiday. They recommend that children choose costumes that are bright and reflective. Costumes should be short enough to prevent tripping, and masks must not block the wearer's view. Adding reflective tape to costumes and candy bags improves visibility. Flashlights or lights attached to costumes are also suggested.

When buying costumes, wigs, or accessories, look for labels that say fire-resistant or flame-retardant. If making a costume from scratch, use materials that do not catch fire easily when exposed to flame or heat. For home decorations, use flashlights or light bars instead of candles or incandescent bulbs. Do not overload electrical outlets or extension cords. Replace any cords that are frayed, cracked, or damaged. Keep exits clear of decorations so they remain accessible in an emergency.

Adults should supervise children at all times while they trick-or-treat. If pets accompany the group, use leashes with built-in reflective material. When attending parties in unfamiliar houses, children should locate the exits and plan how to leave in an emergency.
