The Justice Department is seeking to delay the certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate election results because two distinct individuals named Dan Sullivan are currently listed on the ballot. The incumbent Republican senator appears on the ballot as Sullivan, Dan S., while a retired schoolteacher appears as Sullivan, Daniel J. Jr. This duplication has triggered a formal review of the election process in the state.

Mary Peltola, the Democratic challenger, addressed the dispute in a speech to supporters in Juneau on Thursday. She stated that she was unaware of any other candidates on the ballot besides herself and the incumbent. Peltola told the crowd that she is not interested in tricking voters and that she believes she can defeat Dan Sullivan based on her own record.

Senator Dan Sullivan responded to Peltola’s comments in an interview with Fox News. He characterized the situation as the most corrupt action he has seen in a campaign. Sullivan claimed that Peltola’s team, including advisers from Washington D.C. and Alaska, prioritized finding ways to cheat over defining a policy vision. He argued that the first order of business for her staff was determining how to make Alaskans throw away their votes.

Sullivan described the effort as a secret project that lasted more than a year. He accused key Democratic figures, including Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, of lying to the public about the scheme. He noted that Peltola continues to deny knowledge of the plan despite evidence suggesting otherwise.

The controversy gained national attention after The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Peltola’s campaign and senior aides at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee executed the plan. The report indicated the goal was to confuse voters with two Dan Sullivans on the ballot, thereby drawing support from the incumbent's name.

Sullivan told Fox News correspondent Matt Finn that voters on the campaign trail are expressing disdain for what they perceive as a lack of respect from Peltola. He argued that the first major move of her candidacy was to rig the system by recruiting a candidate whose sole purpose was to confuse the electorate.

The retired schoolteacher, known to critics as Decoy Dan, remains on the ballot alongside the incumbent. Sullivan stated that this incident is the largest scandal in Alaskan electoral history and that the Democratic Party believes Alaskans are unintelligent. He concluded that the controversy will have a large impact on the election outcome.
