Local emergency crews will take the field this Thursday for a charity softball match. Bradenton police officers and firefighters are scheduled to compete at LECOM Park, with all proceeds benefiting local charities.

The event revives a rivalry that has faded in recent years. Police Chief Josh Cramer noted that the two departments played against each other previously when the Marauders hosted the games. In the intervening time, the police department shifted their annual matchup to the Sheriff’s Office, which is unable to participate this year. The two chiefs decided to return the focus to the original police and fire confrontation.

Cramer described the relationship between the two groups as close, comparing them to brothers who help the same community. He said that while their primary mission is to assist residents, they enjoy the chance to compete head to head. When asked about pre-game trash talk, Cramer said the recent interview likely served as the bulk of it. He expects minor banter to occur on the streets when officers clear scenes for fire crews to respond.

Fire Chief Tim Geer expressed confidence that his team has a good chance of victory. He predicted a close contest, acknowledging that both sides field strong athletes. Geer also said he plans to bring a dozen donuts to the event, intending for the teams to fight over the treat to determine a winner.

The raised funds will provide immediate support to people affected by emergencies. Geer explained that the money can cover things like gift cards for lodging and food for families dealing with house fires. It can also assist individual officers or firefighters who need help. The departments have previously supported organizations such as the Haven, and they will work with the Braid and Blue Foundation for this event.

Cramer explained that the Braid and Blue Foundation addresses unmet needs that the police budget cannot cover. The foundation is currently helping fund a gym for the department’s new station, a feature that was not included in the original station budget. The group also supports other community initiatives and events in which the police department participates.

Gates open at 6 p.m. on Thursday, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10, and the proceeds will support charities that benefit both departments.
