A top-two collision in Mississippi high school football is set for Friday night when the No. 1 D'Iberville Warriors host the No. 2 Gulfport Admirals. The contest carries high stakes for both programs, as the winner claims the 7A Region 4 title and secures the top seed in the playoff bracket.
D'Iberville enters the game with an undefeated 8-0 record, including a 4-0 mark in regional play. Head coach Josh Ladner stated that his team is not satisfied with its current standing and views the upcoming matchup as the definitive test. He noted that the winner of the Friday night contest takes the championship.
Gulfport, coached by Blake Pennock, arrives with a 7-1 record and a 4-0 regional slate. The Admirals are the defending 7A state champions and seek to prove they remain the premier team in the state. Pennock described his players as hungry and eager for this specific rivalry, noting that hosting the game adds a special element to the occasion.
The two teams last met last year in the same week, when Gulfport defeated D'Iberville by three points. That narrow loss has fueled the Warriors' desire for payback this season. Ladner emphasized that his squad believes it can play with anyone and that the primary goal is simply to win the night.
Pennock praised D'Iberville's surrounding core of players who exhibit complementary skills on the field. He described the matchup as a challenge that his players and coaches are excited to face. For the Warriors, Ladner said the objective is to mirror the quality of their opponent by playing with class and precision.
D'Iberville prepared for this week off a bye. Their most recent contest was a 55-50 victory over the St. Martin Yellow Jackets, a game that secured their perfect season. The Warriors will need to correct past mistakes and improve on their successes to overcome the defending champions.
The Admirals came out of their bye with a 35-3 win over Biloxi. Pennock stated that a state championship requires a region championship first. He affirmed that his team is putting all its effort into this challenge, just as the Warriors are. The game is scheduled for Friday night in Gulfport.
