A 15-year-old student at Mainland High School was arrested Friday after a district monitoring program flagged text she entered on her assigned account. Daytona Beach Police said the student typed "how to kill the president" followed by "im just kidding" on her district-issued OneDrive account.
The alert arrived the same day President Donald Trump was scheduled to speak at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. In an arrest affidavit, police said the trailing comment showed awareness that the initial phrase could be read as a threat. "Her comment 'im just kidding' shows that she knew any reasonable person would view her original comments as a threat," the affidavit reads.
The student's guardian later told police she does not have access to weapons at home.
When an officer moved to detain her, police said she tried to leave his office, then kicked and swung her arms to avoid being handcuffed. Investigators said the officer brought her to the floor and took her into custody.
She faces charges of threatening to kill or cause bodily harm to another, obstructing police, and resisting an officer without violence.
The arrest affidavit was filed following the Friday incident at Mainland High School.
