Democrats Flip Six Senate Seats, Take House in 2026 Midterms
Voters in conservative states rejected Republican candidates, leading to Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress.

Residents of Palm Harbor and across Florida faced a new congressional majority following the November midterm elections. Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This shift marks a substantial change in the balance of power in Washington for the remainder of President Donald Trump's second term.
Democratic candidates won majorities in both chambers. The party flipped six Republican seats in the Senate. In the House of Representatives, Democrats captured at least eight districts previously held by Republicans. These gains occurred in states including Kentucky, New Jersey, and North Carolina. The results indicate a broad movement away from the Republican party that governed Congress for the previous two years.
The electoral shift extended into states that supported President Trump by double-digit margins in 2024. In South Carolina, pediatrician Annie Andrews defeated Republican Senator Darline Graham. Trump carried that state by nearly 18 points in the previous cycle. In Kansas, Adam Hamilton, a megachurch pastor, won a Senate seat. He is the first Democrat to secure that office in the state since the Great Depression.
Other key races saw incumbents lose their positions. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a three-term incumbent, lost to Democrat Gina Hinojosa. Democrats also captured governorships in Iowa and Ohio. In Ohio, Sherrod Brown won the Senate seat that Vice President JD Vance held two years earlier. In Texas, state Representative James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton despite significant outside spending for the Republican candidate.
President Trump campaigned heavily for several Republican candidates. He held more than two dozen rallies in the final stretch of the election. On Tuesday night, Trump posted on social media that he was not on the ballot and that Republicans would have won in a landslide if he had been. He wrote, "I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter."
In Florida, Republican Senator Ashley Moody remained ahead of Democrat Angie Nixon by approximately three percentage points. This result came in a state that Trump won by 13 points in 2024. Democrats also held onto three House districts in Florida that Republican lawmakers had redrawn earlier in the year. These districts had supported Trump by at least nine percentage points in the 2024 election.
The US Justice Department deployed 1,000 election monitors and observers to all 50 states. The agency described this as the largest Election Day monitoring effort in history. Election officials in New Mexico reported that federal monitors asked unusual questions in one county. The Justice Department stated it would address the conduct.
