Corban Blackwell, 17, has secured a full tuition scholarship valued at $400,000 to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
The student from Palm Harbor began playing guitar at age eight with a navy three-quarter-size nylon acoustic instrument gifted by his grandmother. He transitioned to electric guitar around age eleven, a shift he describes as the moment he connected with his passion for music. By age sixteen, he had expanded his collection to six guitars and was practicing in his bedroom for up to five hours a day. His playing style blends rock, metal, and jazz, influenced heavily by Tim Henson of the band Polyphia, whose track 'G.O.A.T.' Blackwell first heard during his eighth year of schooling.
Blackwell’s path to the scholarship accelerated last year when his band, Equilibrium, won the Smokefreerockquest national title. The group became the first instrumental act to win the competition in its history. Following that victory, the band recorded and released their debut single, Rumination. Blackwell noted that the win transformed music from a hobby into a viable career path for him. He credited his high school’s specialist music program, particularly its jazz curriculum, for developing his technical skills and providing performance opportunities.
The decision to attend Berklee came after Blackwell submitted video auditions for the college's summer program. He spent six weeks in the United States at age sixteen, during which time he auditioned and interviewed for full enrollment. He received the acceptance email while back in Palm Harbor. Blackwell said he ran around the block to find his teachers to share the news. He described his immediate reaction: 'I was so incredibly happy to receive that news.'
The scholarship covers four years of tuition at the college. However, the family estimates living and travel expenses at approximately NZ$50,000 per year. To cover these costs, they have started a fundraising page on Givealittle. Gavin Blackwell, Corban's father, said he has watched his son's musical progression with pride, noting that the sound has always impressed him. He acknowledged that the upcoming move would be an adventure as Corban turns eighteen.
Corban Blackwell is scheduled to leave for Boston in January. He plans to combine music theory with practical work, ensembles, and one-on-one tuition at Berklee. He expressed excitement about the move despite leaving friends and family behind. His long-term goal is to create music that resonates with audiences, and he hopes to tour globally with Equilibrium.
