DoorDash CEO Tony Xu stated that artificial intelligence agents generated only several hundred orders for the company during the third quarter of 2026.

The platform handled just under 1 billion total orders in that same period. Xu described the AI-driven volume as a "very low use case" relative to the overall scale of the business. The data was released during an earnings call held on Thursday.

Xu identified "long consideration purchases" as the area where AI agents could prove most valuable. He explained that these tools are useful when they perform complex tasks proactively in the background for a user. He contrasted this with the simple act of ordering food, which he said usually goes directly through the DoorDash application rather than an external agent.

The low adoption numbers reflect the recent timeline of the company's integration efforts. DoorDash launched its Model Context Protocol connector less than a month before the earnings call. This connector offers a standardized method for third-party AI tools to place orders through the platform.

The new connection is currently limited to a small group of early beta partners. These partners primarily use the system to streamline corporate lunch orders. Without this direct link, AI agents must rely on web interfaces to access DoorDash, a process that requires more effort than the standardized protocol provides.
