Audiences stayed home or celebrated the holiday elsewhere, leaving North American theaters with their second-lowest weekend of the year. Studio estimates put total ticket sales under $56 million, a dip driven largely by the Saturday holiday.
The annual box office trend had been strong before this drop. Domestic earnings stood at nearly $8.5 billion through this point, which is more than 17% higher than the same period last year. The holiday interruption provided a temporary check on that growth.
The weekend's top spot went to the documentary "You Can See Everything." The film, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, earned $10.6 million from 2,655 locations. This marks the first time it has led the charts. Its total domestic gross reached $63.9 million, well above its reported $7 million production budget.
"Clayface" finished second, trailing the documentary by $200,684. The Warner Bros. release saw a 57% drop in its second weekend. Its domestic total now stands at $44.1 million, matching its reported $44 million budget.
Laika's animated feature "Wildwood" held the third position. The film added 150 screens, expanding its reach to 3,100 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. It brought in an estimated $7.5 million, a 39% decline from its opening weekend, for a running total of $25.9 million.
The fourth and fifth spots went to "Wicker" and "Street Fighter," respectively. "Wicker," starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, earned $4.1 million. "Street Fighter" added $3.2 million in its third week. The indie film "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York" expanded to over 1,000 new locations and earned $1.9 million, securing a top ten finish. Netflix's "The Mosquito Bowl" and "La Bola Negra" also reported theatrical earnings, with the former grossing $455,000 from 349 locations.
