Virat Kohli smashed his 80th half-century in one-day international cricket on Wednesday. The milestone came as India defeated New Zealand by five wickets in the series opener at Eden Park in Auckland.
Kohli, who turns 38 tomorrow, scored 74 runs off 51 balls. India chased down a target of 143 under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after rain interruptions shortened the chase. He was dismissed by Jacob Duffy to deep square leg, leaving the field waving his bat to the crowd.
New Zealand bowled out for 185 runs in 40.2 overs after losing the toss to captain Shubman Gill. The home team had scored 259 runs for seven wickets in the previous T20 match just five days earlier. Pace bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar combined for seven wickets, with Singh claiming four for 70 and Brar taking three for 44.
Anshul Kamboj was named man of the match after taking two wickets for 22 runs in his second ODI. Gill praised the bowling performance, stating the team played very well. Kohli also took a diving catch at slip to dismiss Nathan Smith for one run.
Tim Seifert opened the batting for New Zealand, replacing Devon Conway who was concussed. Seifert scored the team's highest total of 38 runs in his first ODI in over 18 months. The five-match series continues in Wellington on Saturday.
