The New York Jets will know by Thursday if they can field their primary pass catcher against the Kansas City Chiefs. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is listed as day-to-day after suffering a head injury during the team's 38-33 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. His status will determine the structure of the Jets' aerial attack in an upcoming road contest against a favored opponent.
Wilson was struck while making a catch on the Jets' second-to-last play of the game. Safety Jeremy Chinn was penalized for unnecessary roughness, yet Wilson stayed on the field for the final Hail Mary attempt. Head coach Aaron Glenn said Wilson reported to the facility on Monday with lingering symptoms. The injury leaves the Jets without their leading receiver, who has caught 43 balls for 527 yards and three touchdowns this season.
The backfield offers a different outlook. Running back Breece Hall, who has missed five games with a quadriceps injury, is expected to return to the lineup. Glenn noted that Hall has practiced on a limited basis for two weeks and is trending in the right direction. The team has managed his rehabilitation cautiously to prevent further setbacks. Hall signed a three-year, $43.5 million contract during the offseason, and Glenn dismissed trade rumors by confirming the player will remain with the franchise.
Braelon Allen has provided stability in Hall's absence. Allen has started five games, rushing for 504 yards and averaging 5.0 yards per carry. He ranks second in the NFL for rushing yards over that span, trailing only Bucky Irving of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Glenn said both Hall and Allen would see playing time but did not specify how the workload would be divided.
The receiving corps has shown depth despite Wilson's absence. Adonai Mitchell set a career high with 147 receiving yards last week. Rookie Omar Cooper Jr. has recorded two games with over 100 receiving yards this season. The Jets may also gain a defensive edge as rookie David Bailey, who leads the team with 5.5 sacks, is likely to play after missing one game with a groin injury. Edge rusher Joseph Ossai, out for three games with an ankle issue, is also expected to return to the active roster.
The Jets have lost three straight games. They face the Chiefs in a road game this weekend, with the final decision on Wilson's participation pending further medical evaluation.
