Former President Barack Obama drew a sharp response from the current administration after comparing President Donald Trump's White House renovations to the decor of a Cheesecake Factory. The remarks, made during a campaign stop in Ohio this week, have turned a joke about interior design into a national political debate.

On Saturday, Obama joked that the White House looked "like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory" due to the abundance of gold. He described the changes as supagluing gold medallions to the mantel and building a ballroom larger than the residence itself. The former Iraqi leader was known for lavish palaces, a comparison Obama used to frame his criticism of the current administration's spending and style.

The White House responded immediately. President Trump told reporters that he had fixed the White House with the finest artisans in the world, stating the building is now in the best shape it has been since 1792. He called Obama "not a smart guy." The official White House account on X posted a photo of the restaurant's large menu, noting that the list of Trump's accomplishments was even bigger.

Vice President JD Vance criticized Obama for being "super elitist" on social media. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited a Cheesecake Factory near the White House on Monday. He ate a French Dip Cheeseburger and told journalists to advise the "Martha's Vineyard set" to try the restaurant. Bessent also compared the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago to a tomb built for Darth Vader.

Obama repeated the theme at a rally in Georgia on Wednesday. He said he was surprised the White House mobilized a whole of government response to a joke rather than to inflation. Obama noted that he is a proud patron of the chain, asking if he could have survived raising two daughters without visiting the restaurant.

President Trump addressed the topic of dining costs at a rally in Texas later in the week. He suggested supporters could spend the $5,000 in direct payments he promised to adults on a meal at his Mar-a-Lago club. He joked that the money might only buy a hamburger and a small dessert before advising voters not to go there if they are price-conscious.

The Cheesecake Factory chain, founded in 1978 by David Overton, currently operates 218 locations with annual revenue of $1.03 billion. The brand is known for kitschy decor, a style described by The Atlantic as a mix of ancient Egypt, Tuscany, and Las Vegas.
