The White House press pool heard a measured response from the podium on Wednesday morning. Donald Trump addressed the status of his successor, noting that the vice presidency remains an open question for the next cycle.
Trump stated that he does not know if JD Vance will run for president in 2028. The comments came one day after midterm elections where Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress. This result marked a shift in legislative power and signaled voter rejection of the incumbent administration.
"We will see what happens. We do not know who will run," Trump told reporters. "There are a lot of people. Maybe no one will do it. Maybe he will not run, I do not know." The president emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the Republican field.
Polls currently identify Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the leading contenders for the nomination. Neither official has formally announced a campaign. Vance told voters during the election campaign that he has not decided on his presidential ambitions. He expressed confidence that Trump would support him if he chose to compete.
The president later clarified that he and Vance have not discussed the matter directly. The 2028 election is the first where Trump cannot run again due to term limits. He has previously stated his desire to return to the race, but the constitutional barrier stands.
