Voting is open across Dunedin for the 2026 New Zealand general election, with polls closing at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 7. Voters are selecting 120 members of Parliament under the mixed-member proportional system. This framework includes 71 electorate representatives and 49 members chosen from closed party lists.

The voting period began on October 26. Residents have had daily access to more than 30 voting locations throughout the city. The current phase concludes on Election Day. Individuals seeking specific locations can visit vote.nz to identify the nearest site.

Beyond the election, several local events are scheduled for the upcoming days. On Sunday, November 8, a classical and folk music concert will take place at 2 p.m. The event, titled Sunflowers in Bloom, supports musical education for young people in Ukraine.

Dunedin musicians Donald Cullington, Sydney Manowitz, and Fiona Pickering are organizing the performance. The concert aims to raise awareness of the suffering of the Ukrainian people. Local group Stand with Ukraine will also present items during the program. Admission to St Paul’s Cathedral is by koha, or donation.

On Thursday, November 5, households in the area will observe Guy Fawkes Night. The SPCA reports receiving dozens of calls annually during this period regarding distressed animals. Loud noises and bright flashes often cause fear and injury in pets.

Owners are advised to keep animals indoors in the evenings. Drawing curtains helps block out flashing lights. Setting up hiding places and playing music or television audio can also provide comfort to frightened pets.

The XFC: The Bucketlist 14 fight night is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at the Edgar Centre. Doors open at 4 p.m. for the event. Dunedin novice fighters will compete after completing a 12-week mixed martial arts bootcamp. The card features both amateur and professional New Zealand fighters.

The main event is the XFC Lightweight Championship bout. Tim McEwan of Hammerhead MMA in Central Otago will face Ariimana Lehartel of CKB in Auckland. Tickets for the fight night are available at iticket.co.nz.
