Gina Hinojosa will lead Texas as its next governor. The Associated Press called the race on election night, confirming her victory over incumbent Greg Abbott. This result shifts the state's executive branch to Democratic hands for the first time in over three decades.
Hinojosa, a former state representative, defeated Abbott, who first took office in 2015. Abbott sought a fourth term after more than a decade in power. His administration focused on border security, public education, and state spending during his time in office.
The win makes Hinojosa the first Democratic governor of Texas since Ann Richards. Richards left office in 1995. Since then, Republicans have controlled the governor's mansion continuously.
The new governor will begin a four-year term in January 2027. The winner of this race holds the power to sign or veto legislation and appoint state officials. The role also shapes the legislative agenda for lawmakers during their sessions.
With 67.1% of precincts reporting, the election results are nearly final. Hinojosa's campaign sought to break the long streak of Republican dominance in the state's highest executive office. The next four years will see a shift in policy direction under her leadership.
