Atletico Madrid ended its two-point deficit from league leaders Barcelona with a late strike from Julian Alvarez. The Argentinian forward scored the winning goal against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, capping a match that saw his team close the gap in the La Liga standings.
The Spanish football federation issued a 602 euro fine to Barcelona for approaching Alvarez without prior written consent. The penalty stems from a complaint filed by Atletico under Article 133 of the federation's regulations. Atletico also pursued the matter through FIFA, though the global governing body determined it lacked jurisdiction over the dispute.
Alvarez's contract with Atletico runs through June 2030. He recently apologized to supporters for comments made during the 2026 World Cup, where he stated he wanted to fulfill his dream of playing for the Catalan club. Those remarks sparked a transfer dispute that persisted through the summer window. The striker admitted it was a mistake to speak so publicly, noting he would be angry as a fan given the team's support since his arrival.
Home fans have booed Alvarez frequently this season, but parts of the crowd offered a standing ovation following his Saturday goal. The reaction suggests an improvement in relations at the Metropolitano stadium. Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal valued at up to 95 million euros. He has since recorded 51 goals in 115 appearances for his current club.
The fine marks a formal conclusion to the regulatory side of the dispute. The on-field result provides a tangible shift in the league table. Barcelona leads by two points, but the margin is now within striking distance for their nearest challenger.
