Golden State Valkyries: Cap Space Opens Door for Star Free Agent

The WNBA champions will have over $3.6 million in available salary cap room for the 2027 season, allowing General Manager Ohemaa Nyanin to pursue top-tier scorers like Napheesa Collier without sacrificing their defensive core.

The Golden State Valkyries enter the 2027 offseason with a championship banner and a distinct financial advantage. After winning the 2026 WNBA title in their second season, the team has secured the salary cap flexibility needed to sign a max-contract free agent. This strategic position follows a season defined by elite defense and a roster that operated without a traditional All-Star centerpiece.

The team finished the regular season with a 32-12 record, securing the No. 2 seed. Their defensive rating of 99.1 led the league, placing them more than four points per 100 possessions ahead of any other team. They forced a 19.2% opponent turnover rate and held opponents to a 53.5% true shooting percentage. On the offensive end, the Valkyries ranked seventh with a 108.2 rating and last in field goal percentage at 42.2%. No player on the roster averaged 15 points per game, with Gabby Williams leading the team at 14.4 points per contest.

Gabby Williams, the Finals MVP, anchored the defense and provided the offensive spark when necessary. In the decisive Game 7 against the Atlanta Dream, Williams scored 28 of her 30 points in the second half. She tied the record for the most points in a winner-take-all Finals game and hit the go-ahead three-pointer with two minutes remaining. The Valkyries won the series after shooting 32.1% in Game 1, the third-lowest field goal percentage for a Finals win in league history. Their four Finals scores were 68, 67, 64, and 68 points.

General Manager Ohemaa Nyanin has emphasized maintaining cap flexibility as a core organizational principle. In a statement made at media day, Nyanin explained that trading the No. 8 draft pick in 2026 for two second-round selections was a move designed to preserve future options. The team currently has only $3.2 million in guaranteed money on the books for the 2027 season. While the official 2027 salary cap figure remains undetermined due to new revenue-sharing models, it is projected to exceed the $7 million cap set for 2026. This creates a substantial amount of available space for new signings.

Several high-profile players are available on the free agent market, including Napheesa Collier, Jackie Young, Kelsey Mitchell, and Kelsey Plum. Collier is considered the most natural fit for the Valkyries' system. As a former Defensive Player of the Year, she would bolster the team's existing defensive structure while addressing their scoring deficit. Young offers elite offensive talent with a neutral defensive impact, whereas Mitchell and Plum provide greater scoring potential but pose greater defensive risks.

The Valkyries face a strategic decision regarding their 2027 draft capital. The team holds the No. 14, No. 29, and No. 44 picks. The first-round selection at No. 14 is the most valuable, though the organization may choose to trade or stash a player. French forward Aïnhoa Risacher is one potential candidate for a draft-and-stash move, given her defensive focus and compatibility with the team's current roster of three French players.

The team's success in 2026 challenged conventional wisdom regarding the necessity of star power in the WNBA. They became the first team in North American professional sports to win a championship in their second year of existence. They also became the first WNBA team to win a title without an All-WNBA player on the roster. Williams credited the group's culture, stating that the team relied on players who were willing to do the unglamorous work of defense and rebounding.

As the offseason progresses, the Valkyries must balance their desire for offensive firepower with their established defensive identity. Nyanin's prior comments indicate an intent to sign a major talent if possible. The team's ability to attract a star player will depend on how free agents perceive the prospect of joining reigning champions. The organization will have the financial resources to make a major move without displacing any members of its current core.
