A registered sex offender in Alabama faces new criminal charges after a local business employee noticed unusual content on his computer. The discovery led police to a multi-year investigation into his digital records.
Huntsville police arrested Daren William Mount, 59, on Monday. He now faces 10 counts of first-degree voyeurism. Investigators from the Special Task Force Rescuing and Investigating Kid Exploitation team seized electronic devices during the arrest. Forensic specialists are currently examining those devices.
The investigation began after an employee at a local business reported seeing concerning images while helping Mount transfer digital files. Police said the files contained pictures and videos of children. Some images were taken at angles showing intimate areas of the children's bodies. Investigators noted that some of the recordings appeared to be taken in public places. They also determined that some of the images had been manipulated.
Mount has a documented history with law enforcement. Federal court records show he pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography in 2013. He received a sentence of 84 months in prison and 240 months of supervised release. The original 2011 indictment alleged his offenses spanned from 2003 to 2010. During that period, he viewed child sexual abuse material on a laptop.
Since his release from prison in 2019, Mount has returned to federal custody twice for violating the terms of his release. A federal judge subsequently ordered him to remain under supervised release for the rest of his life. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency lists him on its Sex Offender Registry. Police indicated that Mount could face additional charges as the forensic review continues.
