President Donald Trump posted to Truth Social on Wednesday to acknowledge the sharp increase in U.S. stock prices. The post came one day after midterm elections that resulted in substantial gains for the Democratic Party. Trump highlighted the market's performance, noting that the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a record high. He stated that the index hit this milestone 91 days after the previous peak, a span of less than two years.
The president told followers that their 401(k)s were "through the roof" and that the market was setting records. In the same message, he signed off as President Donald J. Trump. The financial markets responded positively on Wednesday following the election results, which saw the Republican Party lose sole control of Washington.
By Wednesday afternoon, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had climbed 1,519 points, representing a 2.9% gain. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.9% during the same period. Historically, U.S. stocks tend to perform well in the months following midterm elections regardless of the winning party. However, this year's results were particularly damaging to Republicans, with multiple states and government positions flipping to the Democrats.
The Democratic Party appears poised to take control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Experts suggest that Wall Street viewed this split government outcome as a preferred political scenario. This perception contributed to the price jump observed on Wednesday.
Trump retains executive authority over defense, foreign policy, and certain trade matters despite the legislative shift. In an interview with Fox News, he said he would work with the new majority. "Congratulations to the Democrats," Trump said. "I think the Democrats did a good job. They fought hard. They’ve been fighting me for a long time. This fight’s been going on for ages."
When asked about collaboration, the president added, "I would do that. I think the Democrats want to work with me."
