Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's ombudsman and chief negotiator, said a humanitarian convoy for Oleshky is prepared in the nearby town of Armyansk. The fleet includes 25 buses, ambulances, and other vehicles. The aid mission is scheduled to launch later Friday.
"We are bringing humanitarian aid to the local residents of the city of Oleshky," Lubinets said. He added, "Our main task is to ensure that this aid reaches every person who needs it." Lubinets noted that the team pays special attention to the elderly and people with disabilities.
Armyansk is located in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine. It sits about 85 kilometers south of Oleshky. U.S. first lady Melania Trump brokered the localized ceasefire and the aid mission. She led talks with Lubinets and Russian negotiator Yana Lantratova.
Oleshky is just inside Russian-occupied territory in the Kherson region. Residents became stranded by heavy fighting and mined roads. The city ran out of food and medicine, which drew global attention.
Moscow and Kyiv have observed the truce around the city since Tuesday. Both sides remain fully engaged in the war that started with Russia's full-scale invasion more than 4.5 years ago. Previous ceasefire talks failed or resulted in truces that quickly fell apart.
