Christa Pike reported on Friday that she continues to experience constant physical and mental pain one month after surviving a failed lethal injection in Tennessee.

The 50-year-old inmate said she was prepared to die on September 30 and did not expect to wake up in a hospital bed. She stated that she has been in pain every moment since that night, describing discomfort in her body, arms, hands, and throat. Pike also noted that she still struggles to speak and feels pain in her mind and soul.

Pike attributed the failed execution to incompetence, saying she is deeply hurt by the errors that put many people in a difficult position. She said she continues to think about the family of Colleen Slemmer, her classmate, who was killed in 1995. Pike was 18 at the time of the crime and was sentenced to death for the stabbing death of the 19-year-old victim.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has requested an investigation into the events of the failed execution. He has also postponed the state's other scheduled lethal injection for the year. During a briefing with reporters this week, Lee said he suspects Pike's sentence will remain unchanged unless the courts determine otherwise.

Pike's legal team has asked the governor to reduce her sentence to life imprisonment. She expressed gratitude for the medical workers who saved her life and for the kindness shown by others during her recovery. She said she is trying to heal one day at a time and is holding on to the support of those who reminded her she is not alone.

Pike dictated her statement to her legal team from the infirmary at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she is currently housed. She was hospitalized immediately after the execution attempt before being transferred back to the prison facility.

The statement marks Pike's first public remarks since the incident. She said she does not know why she survived that night or what will happen next, noting that finding hope can be difficult on some days.
