Dade County High School's principal was arrested Thursday after a sheriff's office investigation into allegations of misconduct involving a school employee. Joseph "Brent" Cooper, who leads the high school, was taken into custody by deputies, the Dade County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Deputies charged Cooper with two counts of improper sexual contact by an employee, agent, or foster parent. The investigation started after a high school resource officer received information pointing to possible misconduct. Sheriff's officials described the matter as an active and developing investigation.

Dade County School District Superintendent Josh Ingle notified families of the arrest in a letter Thursday. Ingle wrote that the district learned of the sheriff's office investigation earlier that day and that Cooper was placed on administrative leave immediately. Two assistant principals will run daily high school operations during Cooper's absence, with district leadership providing additional support while Ingle works with the Board of Education on next steps.

In his letter, Ingle addressed concerns from the school community. "We understand that this news may be concerning for our students, families, employees, and community," he wrote. "Our focus remains on providing a safe, stable, and supportive learning environment for students and staff. I recognize the trust you place in our schools each day. We take that responsibility seriously and remain committed to the safety, well-being, and education of every student we serve."

Authorities have not released details on the nature of the allegations, the dates or locations of the alleged incidents, or whether students are involved. Investigators asked anyone with information, or anyone who believes they may have been a victim, to contact the Dade County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division at tips@dadesheriff.com or 706-657-3233.
