A driver accused of striking a pedestrian and leaving the Rapid City road now faces a felony charge and a cash-only bond. David Kroeger appeared in court Thursday, where a judge set bail at $2 million. Kroeger is charged with felony hit and run with injury along with a careless driving count.
Police said the incident happened at about 6:40 a.m. when a black Jeep Gladiator traveled north on 5th Street. The vehicle turned right onto Omaha Street and struck a pedestrian who was inside the crosswalk. Investigators said the victim was dragged several hundred feet before the driver left the area.
Court records in the matter are sealed because the injured party is a minor. Family members said the youth has already gone through two surgeries and continues to face further procedures. The family reported severe injuries to the left hand, road rash across the chest and right breast, and damage to the left ear that will require reconstruction.
A preliminary hearing for Kroeger is scheduled for November 10. The Palm Harbor Herald is providing local news for Palm Harbor and Florida readers alongside national reporting.
Kroeger remains in custody on the $2 million cash bond. The case is assigned to the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Pennington County.
